First-Article Reports for Ceramic Circuits: Account for Every Required Characteristic

A first-article package is useful when a reviewer can trace each required characteristic from the current drawing to the specific measured part and its processing state. A collection of photographs, certificates and a final resistance value does not automatically provide that trace. Organize the report around the requirements that must be answered, then preserve the identity and result behind each answer.

Key design decisions

  • Freeze the drawing and order requirements before numbering the inspection record.
  • Identify repeated physical features rather than replacing them with one unexplained average.
  • Keep completion, conformance and authorized disposition as separate fields.
  • Capture hidden-layer observations before later operations remove access.

1. Establish the exact requirement set

Identify the part number, drawing revision, applicable order requirements and agreed report scope. Include relevant dimensions, electrical characteristics, material identities, finish requirements and drawing notes. A note referring to a separate controlled specification needs its own trace to the applicable revision, not a generic checkbox labeled specifications reviewed.

Assign each requirement a stable identifier connected to its drawing location or document clause. If a drawing contains repeated callouts, define how each physical occurrence will be represented. Resolve contradictory units or unclear tolerance application before measurements begin. An inspection report should not silently choose between two conflicting requirements after the values are known.

3. Capture characteristics in the state where they are defined

A finished conductor width, an artwork aperture and a wet print width are different characteristics. State the required processing condition beside the result. The same applies to as-fired resistance, post-trim resistance and resistance after a later protective-layer firing. Retain each required state rather than overwriting an earlier result with the latest reading.

Plan inspection points for features that later become inaccessible. A lower conductor beneath a dielectric, a bond pad before attachment or a substrate face covered by a housing cannot necessarily be reconstructed from a final photograph. Record the relevant observation before concealment and keep the part and layer identities continuous through the subsequent operations.

4. Keep repeated features accountable

Suppose a drawing calls for four attachment holes. A report row containing one average diameter does not show whether all four holes meet the requirement. Identify the occurrences as H1 through H4 or by coordinates, and preserve the applicable size and position results for each. If sampling is explicitly permitted, identify the sampled occurrences and the remaining scope accurately.

A repeated resistor network presents a similar issue. Four branches with an acceptable mean can include one branch outside its individual tolerance. Where a ratio or balance requirement also exists, calculate it separately from the individual values. One summary number should not conceal which physical element supplies the limiting result.

5. Record the observation and the decision separately

For quantitative characteristics, retain the actual reading, unit, nominal or limit, measurement method and the condition required to interpret the result. Record instrument or fixture identification when needed for traceability. A value without its contact boundary, datum or temperature may be impossible to compare with the requirement.

For qualitative requirements, state the examined condition and the applicable acceptance basis. Do not invent a numerical result for a visual characteristic or enter zero when no measurement was made. A nonconforming result needs its disposition linked to the authorized decision. Acceptance of a specific exception does not alter the drawing tolerance or make the original measurement conforming.

6. Reconcile completeness without creating a quality score

Use a coverage ledger to find unanswered requirements, not to average away a critical omission. In a hypothetical package containing 40 required characteristics, 36 have complete evidence. Of those, 34 conform and two are awaiting disposition; four have no complete result. The evidence completion fraction is 36/40 = 90%, but the package is not 90% approved.

Keep those sets separate. When an approved scope decision removes a requirement from this particular report, retain the reason and authority rather than deleting the row invisibly. Repeated readings of one characteristic do not increase the number of covered requirements. A report can contain hundreds of measurements while leaving one essential insulation or material requirement unanswered.

7. Review the package in both directions

First read from the drawing toward the report: every applicable requirement should lead to its result or a visible unresolved state. Then read from the report toward the physical part: each result should lead to a specimen, method and configuration. The second direction detects attractive data tables that were copied from a different revision or a similar-looking product.

Check units, decimal transcription, repeated-feature identities and the sequence of pre- and post-process results. Use representative independent recalculations for ratios, converted units and derived limits. If a result changes during correction, preserve the original entry and the reason; do not replace an unfavorable number without a traceable correction record.

8. Deliver the report with a clear configuration boundary

The completed package should identify the first article, represented manufacturing route and any unresolved or specifically accepted exceptions. Follow the customer's agreed report format where one is specified. A general characteristic-accountability method does not imply compliance with a sector-specific first-article standard or certification requirement that has not been contracted and verified.

A first article establishes observations for the represented parts and conditions. It does not by itself prove long-term process capability or qualify a later paste, screen or substrate change. Retain the report as a configuration-linked baseline for future comparisons, while keeping routine lot control and change qualification as separate decisions. This makes the package useful to both the receiving engineer and the production team that must reproduce the accepted construction.

Agree how each requirement will be answered before the first-article build hides critical features.

  • Part number, drawing revision, order requirements and any required customer report format
  • Numbered characteristics including repeated features, notes and electrical relationships
  • Proposed specimen identities, panel maps and destructive-witness relationships
  • Measurements required before covering, trimming, singulation or assembly
  • Inspection methods, datums, electrical conditions and instrument traceability needs
  • Existing deviations, disposition authorities and the intended manufacturing configuration
